How it works, in 5 simple steps

1. Plants absorb carbon from the atmosphere through photosynthesis

2. Biomass plants use plant waste from agriculture or industries (such as papermills or breweries) to generate green energy.

This is a great way to generate energy without fossil fuels, and it adds value to local economies. But the CO2 trapped in the plants is released back into the atmosphere in the process

3. Carbon Impact designs a process to capture carbon with limited impact on existing operations. We structure the financing, purchase the capture equipment and fully manage CO2 logistics.

4. CO2 is liquefied for easy transport, via road, train or ship to its final destination

5. CO2 is stored safely and permanently, in underground geological storage or locked in building materials.

We use two main sequestration methods:

  • Underground sequestration in deep geologic formations (such as saline aquifers or depleted hydrocarbon fields)
  • Sequestration via mineralization in recycled concrete aggregates and ready-mix concrete

Robust & verified

Verification and certification: We use CDR industry standards, with certification based on BECCS/BiCRS methodologies published in leading registries.

All our operational data are reviewed by third party companies.

Understanding Bioenergy with carbon
capture and storage (BECCS)

BECCS is a hybrid carbon removal solution that integrates both land- and tech-based processes. BECCS involves capturing CO2 in plants, converting it into power, heat, or fuel, and then storing subsequent carbon emissions in rock formations, a process known as dedicated geologic storage (or using them to make carbon-based durable products such as construction materials).
